The first of Mr Goodwin's drawings is a sketch of the ruins of Cockermouth Castle, the 'shattered monument of feudal sway.' The “bright blue river”—the Derwent—passes to the right “Along the margin of our terrace walk” ... It is thus that Wordsworth himself describes it, in a note to a poem written in 1801 in the orchard at Town End, Grasmere. “At the end of the garden of my father's house at Cockermouth was a high terrace that commanded a fine view of the River Derwent and Cockermouth Castle. This was our favourite playground.”
